Boksburg Lake

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan City

The Boksburg Lake recreation area wasoriginally developed around 1889 as aleisure facility adjacent to the man-madelake that was created to resolve frequentflooding in the area.

Over the years, heavy siltation of the lakeand the chemical pollution of its water, resulted in environmental degradation of thepark. When water in the lake become toxic, the park was closed to the public, as it no longer could serve the local community.

Kamadi Consulting was commissioned to review all the existing studies and to provide the most viable solution that will revitalise the lake and restore a popular, recreational facility.

The multifaceted solution that is being implemented under the Kamadi’s direction, involves deep water aeration; construction of siltation and trash catchment systems; bio-filtration of stormwater and several bio-engineering solutions that aim at revitalising the ecosystem of the lake.

The three-year implementation programdeveloped by Kamadi, will provide acomplex and yet easy to maintainnatural-based system that will significantlyimprove the quality of water and enrich thelocal environment.
